Can Deep Strategy Really Work on a Phone?

July 9, 2026 · Mikael Lindqvist

For years I assumed real strategy games belonged on a desktop. Too many menus, too much information, too fiddly for a touchscreen. Ironclad Dominion changed my mind, mostly through smart interface choices.

The key is readability. A dense hex map works on a phone only if the game lets you tap any unit and instantly understand its state. Ironclad does this well, surfacing supply and threat information without burying you in submenus.

It also embraces slow play. You can set a turn down and come back an hour later without losing the thread, which fits how most of us actually use our phones. That flexibility is a strength, not a compromise.

If you've written off mobile strategy, give one of the slower, thoughtful titles a shot. The genre fits the device better than I ever expected.
